Make Maths Fun!

As part of our vacation activity, we decided we would combine learning with fun!

Hubby had picked up these flash cards set from the US a few years ago and they are coming in rather handy right now :)

So, it's really rather simple. I just hold up a flash card with a sum on it, Gy looks at it for 5 seconds and calculates the sum. Every correct answer, she gets to keep the card and every wrong answer, I get to keep the card.

Along the way, I have been teaching her a few tricks, such as:

There is this incredible PDF for early learners of Maths, which is actually a Teacher's guide. But the principles can be applied at home by parents.

It's been a great few days with this game/educational tool! The thrill that lights up her face when she gets the answer right is so cute to watch. And the best part is, just the number of right cards is reward enough with no material expectation in mind :)

We brought the timer down to 4 seconds on the third day and it still worked well!

As an add-on, I looked for good flash card games online and came across this lovely site:

Gy now wants to sleep only after playing a few rounds of Maths flash cards with me:)

You can make your own flash cards at home, using chart paper and coloured pens.  Here is a link to a very well-made DIY set of flashcards:
