Preschools,Montessoris and Daycares-Sarjapur ORR/HSR layout/Koramangla

Here is a list of preschools, montessori schools and daycare centres I managed to find in the following areas:

Sarjapur road/ORR/HSR layout/Koramangala

  1. Kara 4 kids (HSR Layout)
  2. VIBGYOR Kids (Marathahalli/Bannerghatta road)
  3. LYL genesis(near Staar/Spatica Hospital HSR layout)
  4. Sparrows(opp HSR BDA Complex)
  5. Podar happy kids(Sarjapur road -near Total mall)
  6. Vidyarambh(Sarjapur road near bellandur junction)
  7. ViVaa international(jakkasandra junction)
  8. India International daycare(outer ring road near Sarjapur road junction )
  9. Shemrock Tinkerbells(inside Suncity apartments, outer ring road)
  10. Your Kids R Our Kids(near jayadeva flyover, bannerghatta road)-new centre open now on Inner ring road,Koramangala
  11. DRS kids (Sobha Quartz,ORR,Bellandur)
  12. Srishti Montessori House of Children (Sarjapur road, near Wipro corporate office)
  13. Prakriya school (Sarjapur road, near Wipro office)
  14. Euro Kids (Sarjapur road)
  15. Gear International (Sarjapur road)
  16. Headstart Montessori (Koramangala)
  17. Little Feat Montessori (Koramangala)
  18. Cherubs Montessori (HSR layout-behind Mantri Sarovar)
A mini-coverage of the above is available in the form of an excel sheet.

Another list of schools in the Marathahalli area is available here.

It is not exhaustive, but I hope it will be useful.

The list is in random order with the reviews attached giving a clearer picture. Most of the reviews below are either my personal opinion or what I found online at other blogs/discussion forums and may be a bit biased(either for/against the school). So please make any decision only on the following criteria and in the given order of preference:
  1. Personal visit to the school/meeting the school authorities
  2. Comparing schools based on: facilities/fees/proximity to home or work/curriculum/ if daycare is attached (only applicable for working parents)
  3. Getting feedback from other parents who send their kids to the same school

I have only visited four of them so far, but have done reading-up on most of the others.

*Fees and facilities mentioned here are as of October 2008.For updated info, please contact the schools directly.

Kara 4 kids: (HSR layout) -Review by self

I went on a visit to the school with a friend of mine who sends her son there.

Thumbs-up points:
  • By and large I have heard good things about Kara. They have a separate section for toddlers and another one for the preschoolers. They also have a separate section for daycare.
  • They are pretty much the only ones in this area who use the montessori method as well as provide daycare. The others are the preschool-cum-daycare variety.
  • Good variety of activities inside the facility
  • Provision of food(snack is free-lunch costs extra(quite a bit too)
  • Transport van available-again costs extra
  • Separate room for naptime-(best one of all the four schools I saw)
Thumbs-down points:
  • Expensive! They are really only able to cater to the higher-end families, because the tuition fee alone costs 65k(INR) plus a one-time non-refundable deposit of 15k.
  • Transport costs 47k extra p/a
  • Lunch costs 12k extra p/a
  • Their outside play area is limited-they do have a large basement for outdoor activity, but to me, that is still indoors;)
For more details on Kara(the locations/phone numbers/detailed structure), visit their website

(* The school has very good features and since it was the first one I saw, I could gauge and compare the other schools based on these standards. Two reasons I rejected it were fees and location)

Vidyarambh Preschool and Daycare centre- (Sarjapur road,Opposite Purva Sunshine)-Review by self

Been here on a personal visit with my mother and my daughter, after locating the school online and talking to the lady-in-charge over the telephone. Overall, a good experience.

Thumbs-up points:
  • Location-very convenient-close to hubby's office
  • Transport available-nominal charge of Rs.700 per month for pick up + drop (can opt for one-way transport too)
  • They have differential pricing for admission-depending on which month you enroll the child.Very cost-effective model-reasonable fees(2500 to 2800 per month)
  • Tie-up with Wipro-so they charge a reduced rate for the daycare facility if the child's parent is a Wipro-ite.
  • Decent variety of activities inside the complex
  • Teacher-student ratio is 1:5
  • Minimal furniture to encourage free movement
  • Toilet training done for toddlers(big thumbs-up!)
  • First-aid available onsite;doctor available on call
  • Reasonable fees: 28k for the year(preschool)
Thumbs-down points:
  • Rooms for activity are a bit small, compared to Kara; and with 20 energetic kids, one needs room to move about.
  • Outside play area is almost the same size as Kara-rather limited
  • Washrooms were so-so; not as clean as I would have liked, considering Gy is in the middle of potty training.
  • Daycare being across the road and not in the same facility.
For more on Vidyarambh, their curriculum, their methods, visit them on the web.

(* Was almost decided on this place before we saw Podar Happy Kids. On the whole, a good place to consider)

EuroKids (Kasavanahalli,Off Sarjapur road)-Review by self

This was the third on the list of schools that we saw. Not for nothing are they popular. The environs, the school's interiors, the person-in-charge were all very positive.Hubby and I liked the place as did Gy.

Thumbs-up points:
  • Established school with positive reviews from all over
  • Location close to hubby's office
  • Transport available-500/= for drop/pickup
  • Largest variety of activity rooms we saw(includes Euro gym/Euro library)
  • Large rooms(twice as big as Vidyarambh)
  • Teacher-student ratio is 1:8
  • Minimal furniture
  • Toilet training is done
  • First-aid available
  • Reasonable fees: 29k(preschool/nursery)
Thumbs-down points:
  • No daycare facility(school only from 8.45 to 11.15 OR 11.15 to 1.45)
  • Rather interior location-a km from the main road
Deatils on locations, their online tour of a school are all available at their site.

(*A very good experience, but had to shelve it because they do not have daycare.)

Podar Happy kids (Sarjapur road, next to TOTAL mall)- Review by self

Hubby and I visited the place with Gy in tow. Pretty much the best one we saw.The lady-in-charge (Ms.B) was extremely helpful, patient in answering queries, showing us the entire facility and clarifying all our doubts.

The school is a part of the Podar education trust which is headquartered in Mumbai and has franchisees across four states in India. Their preschool chain is called Podar Jumbo kids. The Happy Kids is a combo of the preschool and daycare facility.

Thumbs-up points:
  • Location convenient-midway between home and hubby's office
  • Large facility, with garden area, play area (slides/swings/splash pool etc)
  • Rooms inside are pretty big( 3 times bigger than Vidyarambh's rooms)
  • The curriculum sounds innovative and different from other schools (New Zealand's Te-Whariki)
  • Teacher-student ratio is 1:5(there is also an assistant to the teacher for the 5 kids)
  • Transport available (for 2 to 3 km radius, the charge is 300 p/m for both pick-up & drop)
  • Minimal furniture-foldaway tables for meals
  • Home-cooked meals available in facility (only for daycare students;preschoolers carry their own snack/water)-The Centre Head is a dietician/nutritonist by profession and supervises the menu for the children personally.Menu changes every day.
  • First-aid available onsite;doctor available on call
  • Toilet training done for toddlers(big thumbs-up!)-Washrooms rather clean
  • Reasonably priced fee structure:
  1. Preschool- 28k for the year (9.30am to 12 pm)
  2. Preschool +Daycare -around 55k for the year(8.30 am to 7 pm)
(The only school we saw that did not charge a fee for taking an application form)

Thumbs-down points:

  • Classrooms double up as naptime rooms-usually not a problem, since preschoolers are gone by 12pm and naptime starts after 1.30; may be a problem for younger kids who stay the whole day
(* Hubby and I decided that this was the best place of the four we had seen and will start sending Gy here from January 2009.)

  2. Hi Aastha,

    Thanks for the feedback.

It's been a month since Gy started at Podar and I have no complaints so far. In fact a couple of my meighbours are also sending their kids there from February onwards.
Most important, my daughter now goes and comes by the school van which I feel has helped her adjust a lot faster, since she sees other kids too in the van.

Where are you looking for the school+ daycare? That will help in making a decision. Feel free to mail me at shyvee@gmail.com for any further info.

  3. Hi Astha,
You can check out Roots to Wings in HSR Layout... they have pre school + Day care.

    Good infrastructure!!
it is opposite BDA complex - HSR Layout.

  8. I visited Kidz Kampus on Sarjapur Road. It seems to be a new place but it looked quite neat. Open space with slides, swings, hut, sand pit and water pit to play. Home made meals, potty training, activities for kids..Rates also seemed reasonable.

  10. Hi Prashant,

Since I don't know of any daycare personally that takes in kids below 1 year, I did a search for the same.

The place called KidzKampus appears to take in kids from 6 months onwards:
    http://www.clickindia.com/exturl.php?siteurl=http://www.kidzkampus.in%20&title=Kidz%20Kampus%20day%20care%20on%20sarjapur%20road

Anything else I can find out for you, if it comes my way.

  11. Prashant,

WeCAre on Sarjapur road also takes in kids below 1 year. A friend of mine sends her daughter there and she is very happy with the place too:

  12. Hi Shyvee

thanks for your comment on Kidz Kampus. I checked it out - the place looks decent and they have mobile and internet tracking which looked very neat.

Any further comment on the place?

  13. Anon,

Don't know personally about Kidz Kampus. Just what I found online.

Best to go personally and check out the place and if possible, get the numbers of parents who send their kids there. Always helps.

  14. Hi, very helpful..I was googling Poddar actually when I came across your blog. I am based in Mumbai and am most definitely considering Poddar this Jan when my son turns 2/ Thanks a tonne:) I know you reviewed a institute based in Bangalore and I am hoping the Mumbai establishment mirrors the Sarjapur success story:)

  15. Very happy to hear my feeling echoed, when you compared the better with the best ! I'm enrolling my 4 yr old in day care at Podar today (22-Oct) with this added confidence. Thanks !

  16. Hi Shyvee,

The above info was relly gr*!!
Do u have any info. on Lyl Genesis in HSR. I am planning to send my 2 yrs old son there in Nov.

  17. @Gopikirishnan- I do hope your experience is as good as mine:) All the best and here's wishing your child a 'happy' time at "Podar Happy Kids"

@ Prathiba- All that I know about Lyl Genesis is what I saw on their website and a review I read on another blog. Seems ok, but I felt was a bit expensive for my budget. I did hear that they have air-conditioned classrooms. Whether that is a good thing or not is a debatable point:)

Good luck to your child and you for this entry into pre-school.

  19. Hi,

I have been looking for Podar on Sarjapur Road. I cant seem to find it. Isnt Total Mall the one near Madivala Market? Or are there more Total Malls? Can you please tell me the location.

I live near Tavarkere Road and am looking at good playhomes for my kid.

    Thanks
    Keerthi

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hi Keerthi,

The one at Madivala is not the one I am talking about. This Total mall is on sarjapur road. Look it up on googlemaps. Then you will get an idea as to how far it is for you. I think if you are on Tavarekere road, Sarjapur road becomes too far for you to consider.

  21. Avoid Vidyarambh for the betterment of your kids and their safety. This is one of the worst play schools I have ever seen. Let me list down the reasons and my bad experiences here:

    1. Kid to teacher ratio is too large. They are just not able to manage and pay personal attention to each and every kid. I got totally shocked by seeing the situation of kids during the recently held Annual day function. All the kids were made to sit in the basement. There was just one lady trying to manage some 25 kids. Most of the kids were totally panicked and were screaming. When I and my wife went to basement to pick our kid, nobody even bothered. With this situation, anybody could have easily kidnapped the kids. It might be the same situation during the outdoor trip (they have such trips once in a month). This is definitely very panicky.

    2. Managed by highly commercial and money minded folks. They try to find out all the possible ways to mint money. Latest being, charging entrance fees for Parents to view their kid perform during the annual day.

    3. Apart from the regular hefty fees, they try to exploit the parents by asking them to nominate their kids to other activities like Jelly beans. They would charge again separately for this. When you don’t show interest in these, they would show their displeasure in some or the other way which I experienced recently. During the annual day, my daughter’s stage presence was just for 20 seconds and that too she was pushed somewhere in the corner. I was amazed to see this level of discrimination being made for the no fault of hers. If she starts getting the inferiority complexion at this age itself, she would never be able to gain confidence in her.

    4. You are not allowed to make a surprise visit to the school to check your kids. If you want to watch your kid, you need to do that through live webcam for which again you need to pay hefty amount. (Another way of squeezing money)

    5. Often my kid complains that her teacher pinched her. A 2 year old kid would never lie. Once I even went and complained about this to the school authorities. But their response was not at all satisfactory.

    6. This is something very un-usual which I have noticed in Vidyarambh. The way they (teachers) receive the kids, if you leave them to school in a posh car is totally different from the way them receive if you leave them on a two wheeler or by walk. This is really pathetic. Are they trying to give special treatment to kids of very rich parents???

I have decided to dis-continue here immediately. Could you please suggest some good schools near by..

    Thanks, Sumanth

  22. Awesome review of the pre-schools. I read in the website of Podar kids that the timings are from 8 AM to 8 PM. Should we stick on to the timings? I am planning to send my son here once he is 1.5 year old. Of all, I found the review of this school to be the best.
I have one more query. There is a branch of this school located at JP Nagar IInd phase. Is this equally good as the one in Sarjarpura road?

    Awaiting for your valuable feedback.

  23. I am sending my 2 years old daughter Preetika to Podar Happy kids, Malad for half day care. My baby is little introvert and doesnt like to go school, she cries alot.I was very worried in the beginning.I m still continuing to send her since the cooperation from the staff is excellent, i can visit school anytime and have a check how Preetika is doing, in case of emergencies, her teacher phones me to inform abt her. They are not very stringent about the day care timings. They ensure proper diet of the child. Overall, its an excellent place for your child to grow & get nurtured.
